Her Highness

The widespread legalisation of marijuana in America is coming with a very feminist side-effect. More women than ever are becoming founders and entrepreneurs in the budding industry of legal weed. Ambitious and determined, these women have been fighting to carve a space for themselves in the male-dominated worlds of tech, media, and finance, but found it more than unwelcoming (#metoo). Cannabis is becoming the springboard for women to build their own empires, right from the grass-roots beginnings.

WomenGrow is the leading organisation helping to launch female-founded marijuana startups.  They’ve become the hub that connects women across the US through meetings, workshops, and networking events. Jane West, the founder, wants to harness the group’s power to encourage Congress to fully legalise the plant. 78 members marched in Washington DC in 2016, and they won’t stop until prohibition is ended.

Pass the wealth around

Meanwhile, Kassandra Frederique is lobbying for the rights of Women of Colour in the industry. The War on Drugs has disproportionately affected minorities and poor Americans for years, meaning people of colour with criminal records are unable to take advantage of the same opportunities. people affected by these laws, not just as employees, but as fully-fledged owners and founders.

So where does the future lie for women making their way in such a controversial industry? Weed lifestyle magazines such as Broccoli attempt to normalise the mainstream image of the drug. Amy Merrick, the florist who works with Broccoli to create beautiful bouquets using the plant, said: “Uncharted territory is a rare and beautiful thing in the creative world.” They’re working to escape the stoner image by speaking to women as casual consumers, with a focus on promoting the community.

Legalisation is a difficult process, with lots of lobbying and red-tape to cut through. But with more states becoming fully legal, women will be ready when it happens.
