Menstruation for the Earth

Radical menstrual self-care

Together with mother earth

Over the last few years, I have completely transitioned into using ecological menstrual products.  There’s a whole variety of magical menstrual products out there that do not harm the earth or our vaginas!

Wasteful

We currently buy over three billion sanitary towels, tampons and panty liners every year in the UK. The majority of these are flushed down the toilet. Up to 50% of beach pollution is used sanitary products.

Not only is this way of menstruating littering the earth but also it costs our pockets too, each cycle spending money to block up our flow!

To make the transition is totally necessary in every essence. For ourselves. For our beloved planet. And it is totally our duty as women to start saying NO

  • No to using menstrual products that are full of chemicals
  • No to using menstrual products that litter the earth
  • No to spending thousands of pounds on products month after month.

It’s time to make a change.

Find balance

We have been lead to believe that menstrual products must be “white” to appear “clean”,  therefore led down the road of highly bleached menstrual products that are fused with chemicals that can really upset the balance of the vagina.

When I realised these things I never wanted to use a tampon again. It is so important to talk with each other openly about our cycles and our blood. So we can collectively dissolve the “dirty curse” label and give our vaginas back their dignity. It’s time to remember just how special they are!

Sustainable options

Moon Cup

What I love about the Moon cup is the way I see and experience my blood. I remember the first time I took my menstrual cup out and looked upon my blood with absolute devotion. Wow, I thought. I’d never realised how beautiful my blood is.

It brought me a connection to this sacred part of myself. I began collecting the blood, diluting in water and watering the garden with it. The blood is a fabulous fertiliser for the plants. My garden began thriving inside and out! I also believe that when we give back to the earth in this way it is completing the cycle. Our body releases that which can be reused in the earth, and from the soil new life will grow. I feel once we all start returning our blood to the earth in this way life will become much healthier and fluid all round! What our bodies no longer need is perfect food for the earth. She truly feels the nourishment of our offering.

At first the Mooncup takes a bit of getting your head around. Getting it in and out can be a challenge but over time it gets easier. I rarely had any leaks at all, even overnight.

The Mooncup collects the blood inside it and then stays inside the vagina until I am ready to take it out. I then decided that actually my body is trying to release this for me and I’m keeping it inside me in the cup.

To me, this suddenly felt obscene, so then I moved onto my next journey…

Reusable pads

There’s a wide variety of reusable pads, with cool colours and patterns. They are made from organic cotton. No chemicals used. They are soft and truly wonderful.

My whole life I had used tampons or a cup to block up the blood.

So this was a magnificent transition to allow and surrender to my flow. It felt when I stopped trying to “block” her up, and when I allowed her space and freedom to just flow, that my cycles became a lot less painful and much less heavy.

The pads work in the same way as normal pads except you do not chuck it away after, I have a large bowl I use especially for my blood and after each pad is full I rinse it in hot water into the bowl. You can put other things in your blood water bowl if you like. I enjoy putting in a few sprigs of rosemary and sage for decoration and honouring of the feminine. After that initial soaking I rinse out one final time and then the pads can be put in the washing machine for the final wash.

I have about 5 pads which is enough for me to last a cycle, but i know women with a heavy cycle who need many more than that.

The Luna Sponge

Luna sponges are small pored, highly absorbent, natural sea sponges. They come to us from the ocean in their natural state. The divers that harvest the Luna sponges do so with a renewable mindset. When divers take a sponge from the bed they leave a small portion of the sponge on the coral or shell that it was set. That piece of sponge will then grow three times its normal rate!

The sponge is sterilised before insertion with boiling water, and can be used from anywhere between three months to a year. They are so soft and flexible and they rest inside the vagina gently moulding to the shape. When placing the warm sponge inside it is quite a lovely experience. I have found I still prefer to simply let my blood flow. My advice is to try them out, give it a go and you will of course find your own way that best resonates.
