Cycles of the Womb Pt4: The Crone

The return to the Cave of Menstruation

“Deep in the forest, after a long journey, she arrives outside Grandma’s cottage. It’s midnight, crystal clear silence in the air, mystical darkness, no moon in the sky. There is snow decorating the mountain top, the trees now naked of their leaves. She sees one white candle flickering for her in the window. She is home.”

The moment the blood descends from my Womb, I feel a deep sense of homecoming. This is the time of rest, of going back into the cave and spending quality time by ourselves in solitude. At the time of menstruation, we are extremely powerful. Our blood is connecting us to our ancestors; we are spiritually very sensitive.

Time Stops

Let’s go inside, wrap ourselves in fluffy blankets, snuggle with our hot water bottle. I find this a very nourishing time. I fully love my menstrual flow, and surrender to the need to take time out. I announce merrily to my friends and family “I am bleeding”, and they all know from this statement that I’ll be going into my cave. This ritual of self love is so important for our own wellbeing and for that of the community. A woman who knows to rest and integrate whilst bleeding will come out her cave deeply renewed, nourished, connected to her inner ancestral wisdom. She will know exactly what the next part of her journey is about. She will know exactly what her intentions are for the coming cycle. She is powerful, aligned, a master of her Womb and therefore unstoppable in her quest. Her period of rest allows her to look to the future. She has journeyed within, channeled the teachings of the crone; she communes with the Divine.

Ways to Make your Crone Shine

  • Give yourself permission to stop. If that means having a day off work; so be it. Make it happen, we are worth it!
  • Sleep as much as you desire. Full relaxation mode.
  • In the enchantress phase the week prior do any cleaning and pre cook some meals so you can literally do nothing whilst bleeding.
  • Make a Womb room – create a special place where you can go to bleed, decorate it with red pillows, flowers and crystals. I have a special red sheet that I use when I’m bleeding.
  • Wear red clothes.
  • Have a special necklace that you wear only when you menstruate. Crystal necklaces like bloodstone, jade and ruby are beautiful options.
  • Do a tarot reading for the coming cycle – journal about its teachings.
  • Set intentions for your next cycle. Make a vision board of dreams for the future.
  • Connect with our ancestors, the women of your line.
  • Return the blood to the earth, completing the cycle and nourishing the soil (see my previous article Menstruation for the earth for further details).
  • Make a special red smoothie or juice. My favourite is Beetroot, carrot, apple and ginger juice.
  • Tell your friends and family you are bleeding and make it the norm that you rest and are supported while bleeding.
  • Have a new moon women’s circle, invite other sisters round and share wisdom together whilst eating chocolate and drinking tea.
  • Be content in solitude.
  • Make a menstruation playlist of all your favourite yummy songs (I have one already on my Spotify and you are welcome to use it, follow me on Spotify at Yoniheart).
  • Write poetry.
  • Read your favourite book (I recommend the Red Tent book by Anita Diamant)
  • Stay in your pyjamas all day!
  • Watch a good movie.
  • Practice yoga Nidra and Yin yoga.
  • Dream – write down your dreams.

Embrace your blood as a sacred gift, the blood brings new life. It is precious.
